There seems to be something about South London and music, as our Artist of the Week takes us South of the City again. 808Ink are a collective, movement, crew and musical conundrum in a genre of its own, visually and musically.
Made up of rapper Mumblez, producer 808Charmer and frequent visual collaborator Pure Anubis ,808 Ink represent and produce a sound that isn’t befitting to one genre or influence, which sees their music canvased with house beats, chopped and skewed James Blake like vocals and even further adrift to heavy metal samples from the likes of the Arctic Monkeys.
Born and raised in South London’s Deptford, 808Charmer a once live drummer for artist such as M.I.A and Tinie Tempah, only met Mumblez at a video shoot they were both present at, with Mumblez performance leading to the two exchanging contacts and forming what we know collectively as 808ink.
Having a very lucid view, which they refer to as ‘dreality’, that place between ‘dreams and reality‘, coupled with their ‘gully’ sound and style, has transcended into something which is real, raw and from the streets. Check out their latest release ‘Top Flow‘, below.
